Whether you’re retired and ready to travel the world or just have some vacation time coming up, use these senior travel discounts and save a few dollars while you relax.
One of the most expensive aspects of travel is your hotel accommodations, so it pays to shop around for hotels that offer a senior rate. There are plenty of them too.
The Ramada Plaza and Conference Center. This hotel brings you comfort and savings with its spa and wellness center and indoor pool. It has 116 guest rooms, many with connecting rooms for families. It also provides a 10% discount to people ages 60 and up.
The Islander Hotel & Resort. The amenities of this resort include complimentary bike rentals, an oceanfront pool, and hammocks. You can’t get more relaxed with that kind of luxury, and they offer senior discounts for people 55+ of 15%.
The Drury Hotels. This luxury hotel has deluxe rooms with king beds, free hot breakfast, a 24 hour fitness center, and free soda and popcorn! Their senior fares are provided for those who are 65 and older.
Staybridge Suites. Staybridge is offering discounted rooms. Their discount starts at age 62, and this hotel gives guests somewhat unique amenities including fully equipped kitchens, a free social hour, free breakfasts and free laundry machines, and they’re pet friendly to boot.
Hawthorn Suites. Hawthorn offers senior rates for individuals who are 60+. To attain the special rates, you must call them directly and present valid identification at check-in. You can also save 15% by booking a week in advance.
Hotels are not the only places where you can attain senior travel discounts. You can find great travel deals on cruises from a variety of cruise lines.
Carnival Cruise Lines. Seniors can take advantage of their discounted fares throughout the year. Simply visit their website and search their calendar for available dates. Enjoy four days at rates as low as $299 for four days and eight days at sea for $949 per person. Note that these prices do not include taxes, fees, and port expenses.
Hornblower Cruises. This less known cruise line is unique in that it tours areas around San Diego. Travel on an old-fashioned yacht and enjoy views of the city. They have brunch and dinner cruises, champagne brunches accompanied by live jazz bands, and fireworks displays throughout the summer. Senior discounts apply to those who are 55 and older and are applied at check-out.
Flagship Cruise Lines. Flagship travels out of ports in San Diego and has special offers for travelers 55 and above as well. Senior travel savings include champagne brunches, thrill rides on jet boats, nightly dinner cruises, and whale watching tours. If you feel like eating out on Sunday, they also have their famous prime rib dinner cruise.
Cruise Cheap. While this isn’t an actual cruise, this company searches for travel discounts on a multitude of popular cruises. To qualify for an available rate, you must be 55+, but you can choose from a variety of hot deals. Book your reservations by telephone and make sure you provide proof your age. There is one stipulation – it depends on the availability of staterooms and dates.
If you aren’t one for water, not to worry. There are plenty of other ways to get from here to there for your vacation. Why not consider taking a train?
Amtrak. Many seniors like the accessibility and amenities associated with traveling by rail. Senior Amtrak travelers save 10% year-round and can enjoy the beauty of national parks throughout the country from Washington State through Montana, North Dakota, all the way to New York. If you prefer to see the more southern parts of the country, take a train from Los Angeles and visit various areas in New Mexico, Texas, and the Old South.
Canada Rail. If you’ve ever wanted to explore the Rockies in Canada, this rail service offers a series of travel discounts, and not just for people age 50 or older. For $1,200, couples receive free upgrades for Trans Canada Tours of more than nine days. When you travel by rail, Canada is a feast for the eyes. See Calgary, Yoho National Park, and of course, the Rockies. Spend a complimentary night in Banff and Yoho on their SilverLeaf ride for just $2,476 per person.
When you’re in the mood to drive on your travels, check out the senior deals you get at various car rental stores. Here are just a few:
Hertz. If you’re in the mood to see the United States but want more flexibility in how you do so, consider renting a car from Hertz. Hertz offers 20% discounts off their base rates for renters age 50 and older. What’s better than driving across country to see Yosemite or Yellowstone national parks and at your leisure? Explore the odd-shaped hoodoos in Bryce Canyon or the Grand Tetons.
Contact the National Park Service to get an annual senior pass for $20 or a lifetime senior pass for $80 too! The senior fares apply to those who are 62 years of age and older. Note that the passes are only available for US citizens or permanent residents. You will also need proof of age, residency, and citizenship.
Budget Car Rental. Budget has their “SeniorDiscounts” membership program. The requirement starts at age 50. The 10% savings is applicable to leisure daily, weekly, and weekend rates and is unlimited in terms of vehicle classes. Drive in style with one of their convertibles, save more money riding in a fuel efficient car, or rent a cargo van and travel with a group of friends!
E-Z Rent a Car. This rental car agency offers seniors 50 and over a 10% discount but requires that the rental is done online. The expiration date is in January of 2019, but the car classes and pickup days are unrestricted.
Sixt and Payless Car Rentals both offer 5% off for seniors. Sixt offers apply to those who are 50 and older and are only valid with prepaid rentals. Payless gives free upgrades on cars and free additional drivers.
Senior travelers also have several fantastic options on domestic and international travel. Senior travel discounts are available for the following airlines.
Delta. Delta Airlines provides discounts for seniors, but you will need to contact their reservations office to check the amount of the discounts, the availability of those fares, and their age requirements. Some airlines will apply their discounts to only those who are ages 65 and above.
American Airlines. American has discount fares for some domestic flights. The discounts apply to seniors ages 65 and older. Call their reservations line for more information.
Southwest Airlines. Southwest offers discounts to people ages 65 and over. Like with the airlines mentioned above, you must call their reservations desk to book your flight and to check eligibility. One major benefit of flying with Southwest is that they will fully refund your money on your flight should it become necessary.
British Airways. Not all airlines based in the United States will travel internationally. Fortunately, a few of the airlines that do also offer senior discounts if you are part of certain benefits programs. The deals offered by British Airways are advertised as limited specials, so you should check their website regularly to find these rates.
United Airlines. Unfortunately, United only offers senior citizen discounts in limited markets. You cannot make your reservations online. When you call their reservations department, ask them the amount of their senior discount and to which flights it will apply.
One word of advice. Before you book a flight with senior fares, check the airlines’ regular and “special” fares first. In some cases, these discounts might be even lower than what you might pay with a senior discount. If you’re willing to be flexible on the dates you plan to travel, that is another great way to save.
There are other means by which to travel, including transit services and by bus. Peter Pan Buses will give customers 62+ a 15% discount on their fares. These are available when you purchase at the terminal or through a travel agency. They are not available online.
When you have the luxury of time for travel, it’s great to know you can save money on whatever way you choose to go, be it by air, road, or water. So, whenever you’re planning a nice trip, check for any senior discounts that may be available. They might surprise you!
