When you travel, you often need to rent a car. It may be because you don’t want to put extra wear and tear on your own car during a road trip or perhaps you’re flying and need a way to get around once you arrive. If you plan to rent a car, there are a few things to consider. The first is to find companies that will offer you a senior discount.
Hertz is one of the foremost car rental companies, and they offer their own senior benefits program called the “Hertz Fifty Plus” program. They provide savings for individuals over 50 with discounts at participating locations. They also allow you to add-on promotional coupons in and above the senior discount. If you sign up for their Gold Plus Rewards program, they make it even easier for you to rent. You can go straight to your car without waiting at the counter. You receive exclusive offers. Plus, they waive the additional driver fees for spouses. As always, make sure that you read and understand their terms and conditions.
While the name may not be as familiar to you, the senior discount Sixt offers is multi-faceted. Not only will you save 5% when you rent a car, they offer premium vehicles large enough to fit an entire family. Like other car rental companies, their offer is subject to change without notice, and the senior discount depends upon whether the store happens to be one of its participating locations. Don’t assume this is a knock on Sixt. You will find the same types of terms and conditions at other car rental companies as well.
Another less known car rental company is EZ Rent a Car. If you’re 50 and over, EZ will take 10% off its base rate for a car rental. The terms of their current discount require that you make your rental online. There are no restrictions on car classes or pickup days, and this offer is valid at all EZ Rent-a-Car locations. A little advice for you is to avoid renting the car while at an airport. Airports will charge as much as 30% in taxes on the cost of your rental car! Doing otherwise will reduce the amount by half.
Knowing the terms and conditions of renting a car is just as important as doing the “walkaround” to check the car’s condition. Make sure you know what the car rental company will do for you if you have battery or brake trouble; if you lock yourself out of the car; or if you end up with a flat tire. This may never be an issue; however, ensure that you know exactly what the rental company will do in these situations to help you and whether you will be charged additional fees. Finally, some places will pressure their customers to buy their rental insurance. Check what your own car insurance covers and if the credit card you use provides automatic coverage.
These are just a few of the companies that will offer you a senior discount for rentals. Regardless of the company from whom you choose to rent, make sure you take advantage of every discount available. You can find most of the information on store websites, or you can call them directly. Either way, you now know the right questions to ask.

Note that while discounts have been found on vendor websites, some have not been verified by the vendor. Always check with your local vendor before purchases to ensure a discount is valid.
